Chapter 9: Evan

“Evan, your phone.” I wake with a start at his voice. I can’t believe I didn’t wake to hear it. I’ve been trained half of my adult life to be a light sleeper, yet a few hours in bed, wrapped up with Jury and I’m dead to the world.

“Hello.” I rasp into the phone. I’ve not been using my voice much since working with the police department and several PI firms that they’ve brought in. They’ve spared no expense and they’ve got everyone that they can on this serial kidnapper.

“Bryant. Maxwell.” He says in greeting. “We’ve got conformation that Eddie Whelms has two of the missing girls in his possession. He’s agreed to a meet up, to sell them both to someone off the fucking internet, who happens to our undercover, PI. If he gets word or suspects that our guy is not alone; I fear that he’ll run, kill the girls and go to ground. I need your eye.” He tells me urgently.

“Have you got proof of life?” I ask, wanting to know that the girls are alive. It’s been weighing on me heavily since we’ve found the other three girls.

“Affirmative. They looked unharmed but scared. Our guy told them he wasn’t willing to pay unless they stayed that unharmed.” Maxwell replied.

“Good. Text me details and I’ll be there as soon as I can.” I say before ending the call. Jury is sitting up in bed, watching me with wide and worried eyes.

“The found him and the girls.” I tell him. It’s been an agonizing five days for me. I’ve used every contact I had; I followed every gut feeling, followed lead after lead and it’s finally paying off. Kash Maxwell was damn good at his job and he also left no stone unturned. Still, I’m confident we wouldn’t have gotten where we are, as quickly as we did, had we not teamed up together. I felt good. Like I was doing what I was supposed to be doing; except at times, when I stopped and my guilt kicked in. My guilt and emotion of missing Gavin. He should be here with me.

“What are you going to do?” Jury wants to know. I probably shouldn’t tell him but I don’t like the worried look in his eye. I hate that he’d been waiting on me to call or text and I honestly hadn’t had time to do much of anything.

“I’m going to help bring those girls back home, safe.” I said confidently, but prayed for a good outcome.

“Will you….I want you to come here when you’re finished. Can you?” His words were unsure but his eyes never left me. He wanted that.

“If you want me to, I’m here.” I tell him honestly. He only nodded and looked away. I threw the blankets back and jumped out of bed. Jury went to his closet and picked out a long sleeve, black Henley and a nice pair of stonewash blue jeans. They were relaxed fit and boot cut, so I could hide my 10’ tactical hunting knife, strapped to my leg.
